Components of Worship
Points of discussion:
Teaching/preaching*
Communion
Praying
Giving
Singing
At this point in our study, having discussed the expectations of our heavenly father
concerning worship in general, we now turn our attention to the components of
worship namely the teaching and preaching of the word of God.
Purity resonates again at this point from the scriptures:
Ps 12:6
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth,
purified seven times.
Ps 119:140
Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.
Prov 30:5-6
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
PURITY:
The quality or state of being free from mixture, pollution, or other foreign
elements.
Purity must be found in the teaching and in the teacher.
Isa. 6: 5-8 (After what process did Isaiah say” here am I send me”)?
Psa.51: 6-13 (discuss when David would teach)
Since the word is designed to transform us (Rom.2:1-2) it must be in cleaned vessels to
complete a divine change. SeeMatt.23:15
TEACHING :
The act of instructing students or imparting knowledge and information. As used in
the New Testament, the concept of teaching usually means instruction in the faith. Thus,
teaching is to be distinguished from preaching, or the proclamation of the gospel to the
non-Christian world.
Teaching in the Christian faith was validated by Jesus, who was called "teacher" more
than anything else.
Since sound instruction in the faith is essential to the spiritual growth of Christians
and to the development of the church, the Bible contains numerous passages, which
deal with teaching.
Matt. 4:23; Luke4:14; Acts 13:1-3; Rom. 12:6-8; Gal. 6:6.
Special attention is directed to the danger of false teachings. Christians are warned
to test those who pervert the true gospel.2 Tim. 3:1-7; 1 Pet. 2:1-3..
Sound teaching was a concept deeply ingrained in the Jewish mind since Old
Testament times. Moses and Aaron wereconsidered teachers of God's commandments
.Ex. 18:20. Parents were also directed to teachtheir children about God and His
statutes .Deut. 4:9-10
.(Borrowed from Nelson’s dictionary)
In the case of Adam and Eve, it is quite possible that we see the first case of teaching.
God gave instructions to Adam and in turn Adam shared that information with Eve.
.Gen.2: 16, 3:1-3.
Gen 4:23-24shows more evidence of family teachings: (read the text) And
Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of
Lamech, hearken unto my
speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
* If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
( loss of intent with self justification) (someone taught him about Cain)
Gen 5:28-29
And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:
And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning
our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
The aforementioned passages are just to establish that a system of teaching was in
place so that one generation could be connected to another thus giving the opportunity
to learn from past
mistakes and maybe go beyond the successes of those who went before them. More-
over, we see that the
teachings took place on both sides of the tree so-to-speak, Seth’s lineage and Cain’s
lineage.
Look a little closer at what Lamech said to his wives in Gen 4:23-24
it shows someone taught him about Cain’s marking however he says it in a way that
suggests that he was justified in killing! Teaching is critical to our doings and goings.
The original intent
from the source of the teaching must be preserved.
Noah was called a preacher of righteousness(2pet. 2:5)why? And could his message
be anything other than what God wanted the people to hear?
Teaching however, as it pertains to the Worship of God must be pure and
consistent with the purpose He has revealed to man. One of the most
powerful examples of this is that of the angels.
When an angel spoke the word of God, the bible says the “LORD” or “GOD” spoke”
notice the following:
Exod 3:2-4
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst
of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was
not consumed.
And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not
burnt.
And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of
the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
Judg 6:22-23
And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas,
O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
1 Pet 4:11
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him
do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through
Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. This scripture
shows the importance of only speaking what God gave us to speak. This practice will
build soundness into our manner of teaching.
The teaching of the nations of Israel was committed to the tribe of Levi.
Gen 49:7
Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide
them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
Deut 33:8-10
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense
before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
2 Chr 17:8-9
And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah,
and
Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-
adonijah, Levites;
and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.
And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them,
and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.
2 Chr 30:22
And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good
knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering
peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers
2 Chr 35:3
And said unto the Levit s that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD,
Put
the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it
shall
not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his
people Israel,
Neh 8:7-13
Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah,
Maaseiah,
Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to
understand
the law: and the people stood in their place.
So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and
caused
them to understand the reading.
And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the
Levites
that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your
God;
mourn not,
nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send
portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord:
neither be ye sorry; for the
joy of the LORD is your strength.
So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy;
neither be ye grieved.
And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and
to
make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto
them.
And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the
people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the
words of the law.
Mal 2:6-7
The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked
with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his
mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
BECAUSE in God’s service there will believers and visitors, teaching and preaching
is necessary.
Matt.4: 23 I Cor.14: 23-25
Styles and methodology will differ among the preachers and teachers of God’s word.
A look into scripture reveals that many of the teachers and preachers of God’s word
had contrasting personalities: Acts 18:24-25 compare John 21:20 and 1 John2: 27
1Cor.4: 19-21 Matt. 23:13-17 2Tim. 2:24-26 Rom.2: 5-9 from the paraphrased.
Though we may enjoy the styles of various teachers, we must never think that one style
is better than another. God uses the differences between us to his divine pleasure. Just
as a master craftsman has many tools to work with, so does our gracious God.
When we enter into the Worship assembly, consider:
Eccl 5:1-2
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than
to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before
God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
1 Pet 2:1-2
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil
speakings,As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow
thereby:
2 Pet 1:12-15
Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things,
though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in
remembrance;
Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ
hath shewed me.
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things
always in remembrance.
